If 28March2009 overlapping 16March1901,I sing and pray at Sg Merah riverside together with first 2 batch of foochow immigrants from China including Wong Nai Siong and Ding Kwan Tau.
I heard Bishop Warne delivered his first sermon from Matthew Chapter 5 remind the new immigrants can be light and salt of this new settlement. He accompanied with them all the way from Singapore.

Yes Bishop Warne was a very understanding Christian. When he heard about the rumours from the immigrants that Wong Nai Siong was going to sell the Foochows as "piglets" or slaves he decided that he would personally see to it that they were in safe hands and that they would be well treated. In a way he made himself a Christian hostage. What a great Christian heart!

Actually Bishop Warne received a letter from Kutian Methodist Church, informed him there were a few hundred of church members migrate to Sibu, Borneo. Geographically Singapore nearer to Boreno, so requested Bishop to take care of these immigrants. When he received this letter he heard about the Chinese immigrants arrived at Singapore, so he was accompainied by foochow-speaking Rev Ling Chen Mi(3 years later he led foochow to Setiawan, Perak).
From the point of history view, the foochow immigrants to Sibu were supported or involved by the Methodist Churches from Foochow, including 2/3 of the immigrants were Methodists as well.
